Been round the block so many times he knows the only parking spot that's free

Writer's block - I haz it.

I can't even find the words or the will to write about why I can't write. That's a pretty bad case, right there.

I'm sure it will pass - it always does, one way or another, right?

But, until then, who wants to help me out?

Pose me a query, pass me a prompt ... throw me a frickin meme, here, people? 'Cuz I got nothin'.

In lieu of that, tell me how you get over writer's block?

Blankly,
Zen

When I have writer's block, I often do this (ask for prompts), or sometimes I'll do a stream of consciousness post (set a time limit of five or ten minutes, start the timer and write whatever comes out), which often helps spark ideas.

As far as prompts go...

- You could interview a blogger
- If your child self saw you now, what would they think?
- If you could press the reset button on your life, would you? How far back would the reset go?
- Write a blog post as a different person or character (your kid, Boba Fett, Captain Mal)

Depends. Are we talking about blog posts or some short story you're writing? If the former, just about anything goes. The latter? I like a series of books called "The Pocket Muse." All sorts of sparks to get the juices flowing, and fun to read as well. I keep them handy and just flip to any page and find something to think/write about.

You'll break through . . .

First, LOVE the Barenaked Ladies. . . It's only me.

Second, writer's block is so frightening. I'm not really sure what ever turned on my writerly self ot begin with, and every time I get blocked I assume it's forever. But, of course, it isn't.

I like to try reading things that make me emotional; anger is really cathartic for me. Try that out, see if it doesn't cleanse you a bit.

How about this...You find yourself with an hour to kill in an empty house all by yourself. What do you do? What do you do?

I think no matter what kind of writing you're trying to squeeze out of yourself, just writing is the key to breaking writer's block. Which is really sucky. It's the only thing that works for me. I think I used to think that everything I wrote for an "audience" had to be seen by an audience, so if I was writing boring crap I would just chalk it up to writer's block and take an indefinite break. Now, I just write, whether I think I can or not that day -- only I don't share the crappiest stuff I write. Learning to "waste" writing time has helped me break some of my most stubborn writer's blocks, if that makes sense.

That, and reading. Read, read, read. The prompts come.
